i started writing this poem back in 2021 during a time when i was very overwhelmed by school and my physical, mental and emotional health had pretty much plummeted all the way to the ground. the poem focuses on the glory and beauty of heaven and how we long to be reunited with the King. it shows how we are often so desperate for a touch of heaven because even touching the hem of Jesus' cloak is enough to heal any sickness and redeem any story. however, there's this tension of the child in the poem not wanting to make heaven dirty when they touch it as they feel so broken and unworthy to be there. in the middle there is this moment where the King (Jesus) meets the child in their brokenness and calls them to Him, allowing them to feel loved by the King. i chose to have the ending be the same as the beginning because it shows how we often fall into this cyclical trap where although we know the truth, we struggle to believe and live it out in our daily lives. however, in the same way, Jesus welcomes us back every time with open arms and great joy.
it's my prayer that this poem would show you the lovingkindness of the Father, and how despite our brokenness we are still loved by Him in every season of our life. you are precious to the King.
[touched heaven.]
i touched the tip of heaven;
hope i didn't leave a fingerprint.
it was cool under my touch
streets glistened like golden stars
saints sung hymns and peasants feasted
too bright for the eye to see
but mere shadows of beings with wings
who flew from room to room
smiling as they served believers joyfully
in the middle stood a throne
and seated on it was the King
He didn't judge, but lovingly said:
'come here my child,
I've been waiting for you'
i knew i was safe
as i was held by the King
resting in His embrace
and breathing deep in His presence
be careful oh child
the King's all-powerful
He spoke galaxies into existence
i touched the tip of heaven;
hope i didn't leave a fingerprint.
